This book collects the essays of a distinguished group of scholars, practitioners and
officials focusing on Asia, one of the key areas of the developing world. The themes
presented in this book reflect topical challenges faced by this continent in its much striven
efforts for development. The editors’ intention has been to promote the knowledge of the
perception by Asian Countries of their developing needs and of the policy measures
that can be used to foster development. What is the role assigned, in the perspective of key
Asian countries, to crucial factors like fundamental rights, the rule of law, environmental
protection, trade liberalization? The concepts of development, environmental
protection, climate change, use and distribution of natural resources are discussed through
the well-known paradigm of sustainable development. But this exercise is more focused, being carried out through the lens of key ideas, and from the perspective of the various countries-areas and the personal
views of the respective authors. These key notions are the rights to life and to development,
and more generally human rights, equitable distribution of resources, common but differentiated
responsibility, the pivotal role of finance, trade and knowledge-and-technology
transfer to developing countries to trigger and support sustainable development.
Analyzing the challenges of development from an Asian perspective does not lead to
results which are only of limited interest to this continent. It is exactly because of its
protean complexity that Asia can offer useful lessons for development in other areas of the
developing world – and maybe even beyond.

Lo Stato sovrano creato all’inizio dell’età moderna non risulta più capace di proteggere noi e tanto meno le generazioni future dal pericolo di una guerra nucleare e dagli effetti del riscaldamento globale, le uniche due sfide veramente globali che chiudono la modernità – ma in modo ben diverso da quel che credono i ‘postmoderni’. La politica si trova ormai dinanzi al compito di lavorare per la sopravvivenza della civiltà materiale che rende possibile la vita del genere umano – e non semplicemente per la sicurezza dei singoli Stati. Ci riuscirà o fallirà?
Furio Cerutti ricostruisce qui la genesi storica di quelle minacce letali sorte dalle attività stesse degli uomini e s’interroga sul significato profondo del nostro rapporto con i posteri, la vera chiave per capire se siamo tenuti o meno a fare sacrifici a loro beneficio. Rinuncia invece a fornire ricette di immediata – e caduca – spendibilità politica, preferendo penetrare con sguardo analitico i problemi normativi e istituzionali che soggiacciono alle sfide globali.
Questo libro «audace» (Andrew Gamble, recensione dell’originale inglese su «The Political Quarterly»), «rigoroso e ben costruito» (Giacomo Marramao su «Iride») è amaro nel dar nome al male che gli esseri umani hanno fatto e rischiano di fare a se stessi, ma rifugge dal catastrofismo e dai toni predicatori, attestandosi su un discorso insieme filosofico e scientifico che include la scienza politica, la strategia nucleare e la climatologia.
«Un libro impegnativo, ma non difficile», come ha scritto un altro recensore, Luca Fonnesu, grazie alla limpidezza delle argomentazioni e alla loro ricca illustrazione empirica.
