Kengo Kuma nasce nel 1954 a Yokohama, si laurea all'Università di Tokyo nel 1979. Nel 1987 fonda lo Spatial Design Studio, dal 1990 Kengo Kuma & Associates. Dal 2001 al 2009 è stato professore presso l'Università Keio e dal 2007 al 2008 Visiting professor alla School of Architecture dell'University of Illinois e alla Columbia University. Dal 2009 è professore alla Graduate School of Architecture dell'Università di Tokyo. Ha ricevuto prestigiosi premi: Good Design Award for "Jyubako", 2017; 15th Public Building Association Award 2016; Good Design Award, 2016; Iconic awards 2016; The 1st Prize of the National Award of France for Wood Construction 2016.
